FPN Peace Story
- by Steve Bruce

I feel its time to do something. I have complained about and attacked others for not creating a peaceful world long enough. What more can I dig up about the war machine. Lots. Its time for me to change my focus and begin to take peaceful steps.

OK. The car is parked and the sign is made. My hands are sweating from judgment. What others will say and do as I stand with my wife and the sign. "Go ahead, Steve."
says the encouraging voice within. "You have always wanted to hold up a sign in peace. Take the risk. Here's your grand opportunity. Here is your chance to speak up about what you believe!"

The war in Kosovo is in the headlines. Where is it exactly? All I know is innocent people are being killed, the area is in conflict, and world leaders are just threatening one another.

I take the sign out of the car and my wife, Sophia, offers to hold it as I speak about peace.
This feels very supportive and we begin to walk towards the bike and footpaths next to the river. I feel the excitement running through my body.

I am standing holding one side of the sign with Sophia the other. The sign reads:

PEACE

I Love Kosovans
I Love Russians
I Love Americans
I Love Irish
I Love Chinese
I Love Canadians
I Love Israelis
I Love Palestinians
I Love Mongolians
I love Hungarians

I Love All Peoples of the World

What do I say ? Stepping forward from the sign, towards two people on approaching bikes, I begin to speak. "Peace." " Get your Peace here." "Peace here." This sounds very familiar to me. Much like the vendors at the ballgame. "Peace here."
They ride by taking a quick glance. I can feel the judgements. What is this guy protesting? What is he selling? Yes, the feeling of rejection begins to creep in like a blanket of unworthy fog. The great nemesis of the salesman. I feel vulnerable.

A young oriental family, beautifully dressed, gently walk by. They point and begin to bow. I begin to bow. Sophia begins to bow. The sign begins to bow. A mutual respect for peace surfaces. "Take peace with you and share it", I say.

"Free Peace" "Get Free Peace Here" The edge of trying to sell something begins to soften. "Free Peace, pass it on." A guy looking like Darth Vader, black bike, clothing and helmet, flies by unnoticing. Nothing personal, but he represents the uncaring predator that exists, he's probably a nice guy underneath. He also represents my judgements of the war machine.

I am now giving away Peace. Pass it on. One person at a time. People ride by with thumbs up. People smile and agree with a nod. Yet they are passing by. No one is stopping to discuss Peace.

A gentleman with CEO white hair rides by glancing back for quite a while as he passes. About three minutes later he returns. "Free Peace". "I just had to come back." He says. "What are you selling?" "Nothing." I respond. "I'm giving away Free Peace."

He asks, "What does that mean?" "Take the Free Peace and pass it on. Give it to one person and they pass it on. Soon it will get to everyone." "Oh.", he says.

Then the CEO with white hair surprises me. "Yeah, but what about someone like Hitler?" Suddenly from within spouted out, "Well if no one would have supported Hitler he wouldn't of existed." Where did that come from? I asked myself.

"Where do I join? The white-haired CEO asked. "There's nothing to join. All that has to be done is give away peace- Free Peace in any way you choose."

"OK" and he rides away…

I am giving away more Free Peace. I am doing something! I am beginning to live what I want in the world. I begin to feel change. The change in me. I look around. Peace is emerging everywhere. From the love and support coming from Sophia to noticing the kind and peaceful actions of others around me. Peace isn't perfect and it doesn't have to be but it's the path I prefer to pursue.

I have decided and commited from that day to continue doing something. This is true.
The next morning the headlines in the paper read--"Peace Declared in Kosovo"

Am I that powerful? Was it the white-haired CEO, the oriental family, others walking or riding their bikes, or even Darth Vader and a change of heart?

I feel it is all of us. I have decided to find out.
